What is Scientific Advice?
A scientific perspective on issues of our day is a necessity for sound decision making. In the absence of scientific perspective, decisions are based on opinion and consequences are unpredictable — clinical studies are poorly designed, public health campaigns are poorly delivered,
and government decision making is influenced by considerations that are not necessarily best for the populations of children, adults, elderly, and workers that make up our communities. Scientific advice must be far-reaching and comprehensive. Understanding the art and science of risk provides the cornerstone of advising on scientific matters – risk science provides sound perspectives for how we can better understand the critical factors that determine individual and population health, for how we can better weigh and address the many risks we face in our lives, for how we can improve our environment for the betterment of society, and for how we can better communicate those risks to governments, industries, and individuals.
Who benefits from Scientific Advice?
Scientific advice is fundamental to evidence-based risk decision-making. RSI experts continually provide such advice to multiple stakeholders, in support of effective risk management. Making sound risk decisions based on scientific analyses of the type conducted by RSI experts supports risk management across multiple sectors, to the benefit of society.

What are the benefits of Scientific Advice?
Making decisions on the many complex risk issues that we face in modern society is challenging. Data may be limited, or the available data may be difficult to evaluate. RSI experts draw on the power of modern risk science to meet these challenges. Clients benefit by incisive analyses providing factual information on risks and uncertainties, and how this information can be used and interpreted in making the best possible risk decisions.

A large number of domestic and foreign animal diseases with zoonotic health impacts to humans must be managed carefully to prevent disease transmission and spread. Risk management decisions often involve the comparison of different types of risk and the cost-effectiveness of different control measures for reducing risk. This requires that different types of risk be assessed in a consistent manner to allow cross-comparisons. The use of disability adjusted life years (DALYs) as a measure of the burden of human disease from domestic and foreign animal pathogens was completed for several zoonoses in Canada.Read More
