Introduction
What is Scientific Advice?
A scientific perspective on issues of our day is a necessity for sound decision making. In the absence of scientific perspective, decisions are based on opinion and consequences are unpredictable — clinical studies are poorly designed, public health campaigns are poorly delivered,
and government decision making is influenced by considerations that are not necessarily best for the populations of children, adults, elderly, and workers that make up our communities. Scientific advice must be far-reaching and comprehensive. Understanding the art and science of risk provides the cornerstone of advising on scientific matters – risk science provides sound perspectives for how we can better understand the critical factors that determine individual and population health, for how we can better weigh and address the many risks we face in our lives, for how we can improve our environment for the betterment of society, and for how we can better communicate those risks to governments, industries, and individuals.
