Engineers Canada is a partner with the German development agency Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ) in the execution of their Enhanced Climate Services for Infrastructure Investment Project.
RSI’s Dr. Neil Comer provided climate and climate change expertise supporting the planned construction of a major infrastructure development sited in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam. This development is required to protect the region from growing challenging impacts including sea level rise, flooding and salinity intrusion into agricultural areas.
RSI was requested to provide technical advice and specialist review to Vietnam project partners regarding the climate data necessary to conduct climate vulnerability assessment for this project. RSI supported development of and processed historical climate information and climate projection data products intended to support the application of Engineers Canada’s Public Infrastructure Engineering Vulnerability Committee (PIEVC) protocol to the project and RSI provided climate analytics from its Climate Change Hazards Information Portal cchip.ca platform.
In a prior Workshop #1 convened in Vietnam in April, Dr. Comer provided on-site climate advice and support in preparation for working session in Vietnam conducted within Workshop #2, (October 16-18, 2018). The working sessions in Vietnam focused on specification of climate parameters, climate data requirements and strategies needed for Steps 1 and 2 of PIEVC as applied to the Vietnam Project.
The trip was very successful and we thank our Vietnamese hosts and Canadian consultant partners, with the goals of completing the PIEVC protocol now well underway with completion of all steps expected by the end of 2018.
