Japanese official sews doubt

Today, a senior Japanese ruling party official suggested that cancelling this year’s Olympics and Paralympics in Tokyo remains an option if the COVID-19 virus is not sufficiently controlled in coming weeks. In response, the Tokyo Olympics Organising Committee responded by insisting that all those involved in the Games were fully focussed on hosting them this summer.

The official, Toshihiro Nikai, Secretary General of the Liberal Democratic Party, said “If it seems impossible (to host the Olympics) any more, then we have to stop it, decisively.” He added, “Cancellation is of course an option,” adding, “if the Olympics were to spread infection, then what are the Olympics for?”
