Technical Support for Risk-Based Decision Making (RBDM)
To enhance the oversight of cannabis production under its regulatory mandate, the Cannabis Directorate sought expert support in developing a risk-based decision-making framework tailored to its compliance and enforcement responsibilities. The directorate aimed to better assess and respond to non-conformance with Good Production Practices (GPP) as defined in the Cannabis Act and Regulations, using a data-driven approach.
Read More Risk-Based Optimization of Enforcement Activities
A federal agency required scientific support to enhance the effectiveness of its environmental enforcement activities. This involved identifying and analyzing the risk factors—both environmental and human health-related—that contribute to the likelihood and impact of regulatory offences. The objective was to develop a structured approach to prioritize enforcement actions under key legislative frameworks including the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, the Fisheries Act, the Species at Risk Act, and others.
Read More External Peer Consultation of the Inorganic – Late Biomonitoring Approach Draft Screening Assessment Report
To support the Chemicals Management Plan under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA), Health Canada sought expert peer consultation for a draft screening assessment report (DSAR) evaluating 47 inorganic substances identified as priorities. The client required independent scientific and technical expertise to assess whether the report’s conclusions—particularly regarding health effects, exposure pathways, and risk characterizations—were sound, complete, and defensible.
Read More External Peer Review of the Draft Screening Assessment Report on Selected C3-C5 Alcohols
To support the quality and defensibility of regulatory decision-making under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 (CEPA), Health Canada engaged Risk Sciences International to coordinate an independent external peer review of the Draft Screening Assessment Report (DSAR) for Selected C3-C5 Alcohols, focusing specifically on tert-butanol (CAS RN 75-65-0). This group of substances had been prioritized for risk assessment based on potential human health concerns.
Read More EFSA Framework for Problem Formulation
To enhance the methodological rigour of its scientific assessments, EFSA sought to develop a standardised framework for problem formulation (PF) within its non-application scientific assessment protocols. The goal was to support the planning phase of these assessments by establishing a structured, reproducible approach for translating mandates into scientifically answerable questions. This included creating a framework…
Read More Pickering Nuclear Facility Re‑licensing
The client sought support to finalize a Commission Member Document (CMD) for the re‑licensing of a nuclear facility. Recognizing the complexity and sensitivity of reactor re‑licensing, they requested assistance in crafting communication materials that were both technically comprehensive and accessible to regulatory bodies and broader audiences. The work included drafting a clear and well‑structured CMD,…
Read More Risk Assessment of the Impact of Lethality Standards on Salmonellosis from Ready-to-Eat (RTE) Meat and Poultry Products
To support regulatory decision-making, a comprehensive risk assessment was conducted to evaluate how varying lethality performance standards would impact the public health burden of salmonellosis associated with Ready-to-Eat (RTE) meat and poultry products. The primary objective was to quantify the expected number of cases of illness under different reductions in Salmonella presence across a broad spectrum of RTE product categories.
Read More Environmental Health Factors, Chronic Diseases, and Pandemic Resilience
To support more effective health policy and pandemic preparedness, this project examined how environmental health factors intersect with chronic disease and influence pandemic resilience. The client sought evidence to clarify how exposures to contaminants in air, water, and soil contribute to the environmental burden of disease in Canada and exacerbate vulnerability to infectious disease outcomes, including COVID-19.
Read More Measuring impact of zoonotic animal diseases in Canada
A large number of domestic and foreign animal diseases with zoonotic health impacts to humans must be managed carefully to prevent disease transmission and spread. Risk management decisions often involve the comparison of different types of risk and the cost-effectiveness of different control measures for reducing risk. This requires that different types of risk be assessed in a consistent manner to allow cross-comparisons. The use of disability adjusted life years (DALYs) as a measure of the burden of human disease from domestic and foreign animal pathogens was completed for several zoonoses in Canada.
