Chemical and Product Safety
Assessing and managing potential harms from chemicals and products, providing significant improvements to public health and safety
Introduction
Why does Chemical and Product Safety need risk science?
Products purchased in stores provide each of us an array of benefits and daily uses for cleaning, entertainment, nourishment, medication, and beauty. However, the entire lifecycle of chemicals and products, their chemistry and transportation and use, can involve health risks for consumers, workers, or children. Risk science provides perspective for understanding possible harms, as well as insight into safe use and improved decision-making.
"Concern for man himself and his fate must always form the chief interest of all technical endeavor."
by Albert Einstein
RSI and Chemical and Product Safety
RSI's Motivation
Risk Sciences International has long worked with governments to understand safe levels of chemicals in our environment. Unfortunately, many of the products and chemicals in common use in our society have not been adequately evaluated. Our team has conducted in-depth assessments of short-term and long-term health risks from chemicals and products in common use. Our intention is to provide scientific expertise and advice where it matters most, encouraging informed and responsible stewardship of dangerous chemicals. By providing scientific assessments of potential risks associated with chemicals and chemical products, using the best available techniques in risk science, RSI seeks to ensure technological advancement in a safe and effective manner.
What is our expertise in Chemical and Product Safety?
Collectively, RSI experts and affiliates have in-depth expertise in epidemiology, toxicology, pharmacology, medicine, biostatistics, and risk assessment that provide a solid foundation for characterizing potential risks associated with chemicals in our environment and the products that we use on a daily basis.
Our clients include a wide range of public and private sector organizations, both in Canada and internationally. Our expertise has informed environmental protection activities, chemical and consumer product safety, and pollutant prioritization programs.
Serving You
RSI experts have diverse skill sets, including the following.
Epidemiology: RSI has analyzed large and complex data sets to explore environmental, occupational, food and medical exposures on population health. Recent RSI publications provide systematic reviews as well as a synthesis of epidemiology and toxicology data in the context of population health risk and safety assessment.
Toxicology: RSI has expertise in diverse aspects of toxicology including kinetics, mode of action, adverse outcome pathways, mixtures and interactions, as well as the 21st century toxicity testing paradigm. We have contributed to IUCLID and development of biomonitoring equivalents based on toxicology data and regulatory levels. WE have also conducted dose-response and risk assessments for industry, government, and citizen groups to characterize health risks using state-of-the-art methods and techniques.
Pharmacology: RSI has developed and utilized non-compartmental analysis, population pharmacokinetics and physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models. We can work with your organization to apply contemporary, modern pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic approaches to understand exposure of target tissues.
Concern for chemical hazards and safety touches on all aspects of society and the environment.
